- To resolve this issue, Henry Clay came up with a compromise called the Missouri Compromise. It admitted Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state to balance out the number of slave states and free states.
- Missouri becoming a state sparked many national debates among the country, since it would upset the balance between the North and South.
- Missouri needs to become a slave state!
- No! It needs to be a free state.
- Henry Clay suggested a compromise, later known as the Compromise of 1850 to solve the California crisis.
- California will be a free state, New Mexico and Utah can decide whether to have slavery, trade slave in Washington D.C. will be prohibited, and a strong law targeting fugitives will be passed.
- I can't agree with this!
- The Compromise of 1850 was not easily accepted by the North and South, but after 9 long months it was accepted.
