The author makes the character is very sad, which makes the reader sad. I am sad, but the poem gets happier and the attitude changes.

When it says “There is not a day I don’t think of you” the mood changes to a happier mood. It is a shift because the beginning of the poem is very sad, and then after the poem says that it get a little bit happier.
To show that people will die at some point and that you need to be strong.
