  • Ayah Nomkhu is an environmental researcher and community activist, they identify as non binary and grew up in an African indigenous community where they used their personal experiences to help connect with others and bridge the gap between injustices related to LGBTQ and the environment. They also keep their culture and history alive and challenge dominant narratives.

  • Ayah's work focuses on protecting land from being repurposed by corporations for industrial means. they consistently collaborate with local indigenous leaders to help prove cultural significance of the land whilst also providing scientific evidence to assert sovereignty in legal frameworks. Although all cultural land is sacred in Ayah's world, they still face resistance from big corporations who try and bend the laws to their favor.

  • Ayah's activism stretches from indigenous communities to LGBTQ communities. They organized a communal housing project designed to support Queer and marginalized individuals, prioritizing safety and shared labor amongst the people. Ayah fights for policies that help dismantale the patriarchal hierarchies in society and promoting inclusive deciison making.

  • Ayah recounts their people's history to young kids in the village, teaching how the indigenous groups lived in harmony and how they could continue this tradition for future generations. Ayah fights hard to make sure the people retain their sovereignty over the land and that their people's culture is not lost or erased.

  • Ayah uses their skills as an environmental researcher to promote a mangrove reforestation project which will help against flooding while still fostering biodiversity. Ayah has to fight against big corporations that push a false narrative to promote resistance against the projects for financial gain. Ayah focuses on mitigating the relocation of marginalized individuals by protecting the land.

  • The media attempts to push narratives about Ayah's people aswell as other indigenous groups depicting their people as savages and incapable of self governance. They also try and portray the community projects as detrimental to society

  • In response to the false narratives that the media pushes, Ayah uses this as an opportunity to highlight the stories of the indigenous groups and the success of the environmental projects, this helped mitigate the negative propaganda marginalized groups faced
