what if . . . ?Maria's mother never left Bayamón, Puerto Rico, and my mother never left Greenville. What if no one had ever walked the grassy fieldsthat are now Madison Street and said,Let's put some houses here. What if the people in Maria's building didn't sell1279 Madison Streetto Maria's parentsand our landlord told my mom that he couldn't rent1283to someone who already had four children. What if the park with the swings wasn't right acrossKnicker Bocker AvenueWhat if Maria hadn't walked out of her buildingone day and said,My name is Maria but my mom calls me GoogooWhat if I had laughed instead of saying,You're lucky, I wish I had a nickname, too,You want to go to the park sometime? What if she didn't have a sister and two brothersand I didn't have a sister and two brothersand her dad didn't teach us to boxand her mother didn't cook such good foodI can't even imagine any of it, Maria saysNope, I say. Neither can I.
I can't even imagine it.
Nope, Neither can I
This poem is imprtant to me because it reminds me of my childhood. I remeber climbing a tree and just thinking about how lucky I was to have all the things that I have. I used to think about who I would be if I had not met my friends or family. I garuntee that if you just think about all that has happened in your life, and you think about what would happen if the good things didn't happen, you will come away from the experience feeling better about yourself. If you are feeling bad, it will open your eyes to how worse things could really be, and that you are not at rock bottom. Overall, I just think that this poem is a way to reflect on all the good things that have happened in your life.
