- He's wounded! Who is he?
- What shall we do with this man?
- What works? What are the benefits?
- He is scarred....
- He will live, in spite of it all...
- How does this make them feel?
- Have we truly done the right thing?
- Japan, WWII -- A gravely injured American sailor washes up on the beachfrontproperty of Dr. Sadao Hana Hoki. Whatshould theydo with him? Sheltering an enemy is dangerous, but Sadao has an obligation... or does he?
- What are some alternatives?
- I cannot throw a wounded man into the sea.
- The servants know. Will they report us?
- They decide to shelter him and treat him. Once he's recovered, they'll turn him over to the authorities. Hippocratic oath is upheld, loyalty to Japan is intact, guilt should be assuaged.
- What could go wrong?
- hmmmm... And what about the General? Should I tell him my plan?
- hfkfgir.....
- You've saved my life twice....
- Hana and Sadao are unsure they've made the right decision. While the enemy is still in their home, they are committing treason, even though Sadao's Hippocratic oath compels him to save lives. Hana is anxious, Sadao is angry at the sailor out of concern for her...
- What's the solution?
- Signal if you need me. Go.Now.
- I still don't know why I'm doing this...
- They could toss him back into the sea, and let nature take its course, or they could bring him in and treat him, then turn him over to the authorities....
- Neither can I. But this could be dangerous....
- The servants could report them to save themselves, The General, Sadao's superior, may turn on Sadao and have them arrested.
- Once the sailor, Tom, has healed, Sadao prepares a boat, a flashlight to communicate, and provisions and sends him out to a nearby island where he will be rescued and returned to US forces. Sadao, however is still unsure of the rightness of his decision....
