In 2005, California Mayor Edmund G. Brown enacted a law that banned the sale of violent video games to minors to help parents protect their kids from cruel and gory images because it was thought that playing violent video games lead to violent behavior. The Entertainment Merchants Association, a group representing the interests of the home gaming industry sued saying they were infringing on their first amendment rights to free speech.
This case took place between the state of California and Entertainment Merchants Association. California tried to prevent minors from buying violent games. This case was in 2012 at the supreme court. This case was interesting because Arnold Schwarzenegger was in support of the law.
The court ruled in favor with Entertainment Merchants Association and nullified the law. This means that minors can buy video games without parent supervision.
This ruling was big for the video game industry as it affirmed the constitutional rights of game developers and made sure that no one could make a law that could undermine that.
