One day, police decided to raid the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar- a common practice at the time. However, the community decided to rise up that day. According to eyewitness accounts, one of the main perpetrators of the push back was none other than Marsha herself.
As a child, Marsha was enrolled in the Elizabeth Public School System. She graduated from Thomas A. Edison high school in 1963. She even enrolled in the Navy for a short time!
Marsha P. Johnson was born in new York on August 24th, 1945.

After moving to Greenwich Village in New York, Marsha struggled with not having a lot of money. However, an unlikely community would soon answer her prayers…
She soon became a part of New York’s Drag scene, choosing the name “Marsha P Johnson” for her drag persona.
Eventually, she would start a successful world tour with the drag theatre company The Hot Peaches.
Johnson soon became a mothering figure to the community, known for helping homeless and otherwise in need LGBTQ youth.
After the stonewall incident, Marsha co-founded STAR, the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries, an organization that provided things such as shelter to struggling LGBTQ youth.

On July 6, 1992, Marsha’s body was found in the Hudson River. It was ruled as a suicide, but many close to Marsha doubt this evaluation.
