Storyboard Text

  • Horatio joins Barnardo and Marcellus on their watch to see an apparition they say takes the form of King Hamlet.
  • In the same figure, like the King that's dead.
  • State address by Claudius. Hamlet is unhappy about marriage of Claudius and Gertrude. In a soliloquy he expresses his disgust at the state of affairs and contemplates suicide. Horatio tells Hamlet about the Ghost. Hamlet is then told about the Ghost by Horatio
  • The Ghost tells Hamlet that he was poisoned by Claudius and calls on Hamlet to avenge him.
  • The serpent that did sting thy father's life/Now wears his crown
  • The time is out of joint. O cursed spite,/That ever I was born to set it right!
  • Rosencratz and Guildenstern are summoned to spy on Hamlet. The Players arrive. Hamlet inserts lines into a play, in order to confirm that Claudius is guilty. In a soliloquy, he berates himself for his inaction.
  • The play's the thing/Wherein I'll catch the conscience of the King.
  • Claudius and Polonius spy on Hamlet. In a soliloquy, Hamlet reflects on life, death and suicide. Opehlia returns his presents, and Hamlet treats her cruelly.
  • To be, or not to be - that is the question
  • Get thee to a nunnery!
  • The players perform. Claudius is destressed and leaves abruptly. Hamlet has proof that Claudius is guilty, and he is ready to act.
  • Now could I drink hot blood,/And do such bitter business as the day/Would quake to look on.
