  • There were many holes, possibilities, adventures, and more. The experience was weird because the tunnels under my town, Kolano, each as massive as a plane, amazed and intimidated my friends and me. Little did we know that these holes would be the preface of an unexpected and extraordinary quest, a journey that would lead to discovering a part of myself I didn’t know about.
  • Slide: 2
  • It all started when Alex, Trixie, and I strolled home from school. Trixie usually had her decorated composition book for writing new ideas about poetry, but this time, she was empty-handed and appeared melancholy without it. Meanwhile, Alex played a game on his phone. Our day was going out typically until I spotted something. “Are you okay, Dawn?” Trixie stopped and tugged Alex by his hoodie so he could also pause. “I think I see something in these bushes.” I said as I trekked down the sidewalk and approached what looked like a wooden trap door with a handle.” Is that a secret passage?” Alex said after he finally looked up from his distracting phone. Surprised by the unexpected discovery, I opened and walked down the unknown hatch, and my friends followed me. At first, the inside was a pitch-black cave, so we had to use our phone lights to see. “Are you sure we should be going down here?” Trixie said from behind,” Our parents are going to worry.” “Don’t worry, we’ll only be in this cave briefly.” Inside were rocks, pointy spikes, and a waterway with an abandoned canoe ahead.

  • “The last one inside is a rotten egg!” I yelled as I raced to get inside the boat. “Wait a minute, Dawn!” Trixie tried to keep up with me while Alex stared at his phone. To my amazement, she dashed past me and hopped into the canoe. “Well, you win,” I remarked while I caught my breath. “Maybe you should try to keep up with gym class,” Trixie teased, “Come on, Alex! Remove your head off that phone for once.” We entered the canoes, and I oared it through the noodle-like waterway. The cave was still very dark, but the more we rode across, the more beautiful and shiny crystals appeared around us. “Oh, my Wi-Fi went off,” Alex groaned, “Wow, these gems are shiny.” “I wish I had my composition book to write this all down.” I could see Trixie's’ eyes filled with inspiration.

  • Suddenly, a voice interrupted our musings. “Hello!” said an unusual spirit floating before Alex. “Oh shoot!” Alex pounced from his seat. “I’m no threat,” she said, “My name is Lily, and I’m going to help you travelers on your journey.” Lily and her personality were as bright as the tunnel crystals, but her body flowed like a blanket. “Nice to meet you! I’m Dawn, and this is my friend Trixie and the internet head Alex.” I said, “We don’t understand much about this cave, so we appreciate your help.” “I can push the canoe for you,” Lily responded as she flew behind our boat and propelled it forward. “Hey, Lily, I was wondering if you’re a fan of poetry?” Trixie questioned. “I adore it! Words are out of the ordinary but amusing!” “Cool!” Trixie grinned as the canoe came to a stop.

  • As we all hopped out of the boat, I saw a light brown backpack almost covered in dirt. “Hey guys! Looks like someone lost a bag.” I pointed to it next to a spike. “Who does this belong to?” Alex crouched down, dug through the backpack, and hoisted a leather journal. “A book!” I said, “Lily, any idea what this is or who owned it?” “I haven’t the slightest, my apologies,” she frowned. I cracked the journal open and skimmed back and forth through the pages. Suddenly, a map with scribbles on it dropped out. I picked up the atlas and noticed it led to an unheard treasure in these treacherous caves. “Oh, sweet! We’re going on a treasure hunt!” Alex said with excitement. “Looks like it,” I replied, “What do you say, gang? Want to hunt a bounty with me?” “Yup!” Alex said, and I noticed he paid more attention to our adventure than before. I put the journal inside the backpack and kept the map. “I’ll take the bag in case we need it.” Trixie swung it over her shoulder, and Lily nodded and followed along. The unexpected discovery added a thrilling twist to our journey, but it also brought us closer together as a team.

  • As we trotted, the bright gems slowly disappeared, and darkness set in again. Lily’s bodily light came in pretty handy. Out of nowhere, wood snapped under my feet, and I fell through a hole. “Dawn!” Trixie’s voice echoed. I grasped a branch and safely landed on the ground. My phone ran out of battery, and the cave walls were narrower. I hollered my friends' names so they would know I was safe. I abruptly felt claustrophobic, and my chest felt tight. “Someone help me,” my voice cracked, “Please?” I curled myself and covered my head. I wished to find a treasure, but not pure nightmare fuel!

  • At first, I had given up and probably waited for a miracle until I sensed a small light above my head. I unraveled myself and noticed three of those minuscule, illuminated lights. I placed my map down and stood up to see them better with my full undivided attention. Then, they started to fly hastily towards the other end of the cave. “Wait!” I yelled and dashed as fast as I could. Soon, the lights disappeared, and I halted at a hole with a warm glow above me. “At least I found an exit, but how do I get there?” my eyebrows furrowed. Out of nowhere, a million of those little lights came from behind me and spiraled around me. And then, unexpectedly, I slowly floated from my short blond hair to my feet! My fears about anything I had vanished, and I felt like a god. When the lights set me down, there was a golden temple interior around me and a treasure chest on a shiny pedestal in the center! “Oh, Wow.” I was utterly speechless, my eyes wide with wonder at the sight before me. I could hardly believe my eyes- a treasure chest in this mystical place before me.
  • Slide: 12
  • I almost opened the treasure when I heard footsteps from a flaxen entrance on another wall. My friends rushed out, trying to catch their breath, and immediately saw me. “Dawn!” Trixie covered her mouth and shed some tears. “Guys!” I ran over and wrapped my arms around Trixie and Alex. I could tell he was also emotional since he sniffled on my shoulder. From that point on, our relationship blossomed. “How did you all find me?” I asked as we released ourselves, and I wiped my eyes with my dusty hand. “Lily led us the way,” Alex explained as we all looked at her floating beside the entrance. “Thank you.” I walked over and hugged her, too. “It was the least I could do.” she patted my back. I let go of Lily and glanced at the treasure. “Hey, there’s the treasure!” Trixie’s face filled with surprise. “Race you to the gold!” Alex said as he sprinted to the treasure. Trixie and I ran after him, but Alex unexpectedly beat us to the chest. “You’re not the only one who keeps up with gym class.” He grinned and winked at Trixie. “Well, open the treasure chest, champion,” I said.

  • Alex opened it, and a basketball-sized light came from inside. It flew right into Lily, and she glowed so brightly that my friends and I had to shield our eyes. After the transformation, we saw that Lily's form had changed dramatically. She was now a human with long blonde hair and wore a white, flowy dress. “Oh, wow!” Trixie gasped while me and Alex’s mouths were wide open, “Lily, you’re a human!” “I did always believe in magic.” Lily smiled after she looked at her dress. Exhausted, we decided to go home, but my friends and I left that cave feeling slightly different.

  • One thing was certain: I left my old, crummy ways behind and discovered a part of myself I never knew existed. The cave adventure sparked my curiosity for nature, inspiring me to become a bold adventurer in the future. I even started taking long hikes with my parents and friends. Speaking of friends, my bond with Trixie, Alex, and Lily grew more robust than ever. The thought of almost losing them in the cave made me realize how much I value them. Yet, I yearn to rediscover that cave and unravel its mysteries. The prospect of more adventures like this one fills me with excitement!
  • Slide: 18
  • My friends have also changed in good ways. Alex used his new running skills in track racing and even won a champion cup. Trixie and I went to a couple of his races and applauded the loudest. As for Trixie, the cave gems inspired her to adore poetry, so she joined our school’s writing club and became closer to her fellow poets. My parents also adopted Lily as my new sister! Since she doesn’t have a family and I’m an only child, I can always have a friend at home. Lily is learning about the human world from me and becoming a serious bookworm. It’s ridiculous that one cave adventure changed us all at once, but it also taught me something crucial. Before, I didn’t use my curiosity to its full potential, and I thought it was a personality trait. Now, I embrace it and hope to use it on future adventures. When I left the cave, I scratched on the rocky wall with a stick, “Dawn was here.” I wanted to leave my stamp on the place that gave me and my friends a life-changing adventure. The End
