Class, Today we will be talking about Ocean acidification
The ocean is one of the major carbon sinks and is absorbed because of human activities. CO2 is a dependent solution that when the temperature rises less CO2 will be absorbed.
Here are 5 facts about ocean acidification
2. H+ ions will lower the ocean pH (acidification) and will also combine with free carbonate ions to form more hydrogen carbonate
1. Carbon dioxide will combine with water to form carbonic acid, which dissociates into hydrogen ions and hydrogen carbonate
3. With less free carbonate ions in the water, marine organisms are less able to produce calcium carbonate (via calcification). 4. Calcium carbonate is used to form the hard exoskeleton of coral and is also present in the shells of certain molluscs
5. Hence increasing concentrations of dissolved carbon dioxide threatens the viability of coral reefs and certain molluscs
Elle, do you understand the topic?
yes, sir.
The rising level of atmospheric carbon dioxide causes a decrease in the ocean water pH. Meanwhile, the decreasing level would endanger marine animals or living things because they needed calcium carbonate.
Oh, I see sir.
In conclusion, The consequences of ocean acidification is the disappearance of coral reefs, loss in revenue of tourism, algae will flourish as there is more CO2 that increases photosynthesis.
