Legalizing Sports Betting

Storyboard Text

  • Have you ever sports betted before? Sports betting dates back to the 19th century, and it is essentially the act of predicting sports results and placing a wager on the outcome. However, it is not legalized across the entire United States yet. Personally, I think our economy is missing out on tax returns, new jobs, and additional revenue that could solve a plethora of problems.
  • I have sports betted in the past and lost thousands of dollars. I don't think this practice should be legalized. Viewers become more focused on making money rather than simply enjoying the matches for its original purpose. I focused more on the rules of the game and how I could better my chances and began to not appreciate sports as much.
  • I beg to differ. I understand that many people agonize over the harmful financial effects. However, sports betting has proven to enhance the economy's overall wealth and standard of living. It essentially upholds American freedom and allows people to make decisions with their own money.
  • How so? I have not had great experiences with my money while sports betting, and I feel that it can lead to addiction. It involves very large sums of money, and there's no guaranteed win or loss. Furthermore, as I became involved in this hobby, I was never satisfied with a win, and when I lost, it made me that much more motivated to win it back. Overall, it has negatively impacted me.
  • First off, casino gambling has statistically proven to boost the economy and legalizing sports betting could make that even larger. The largest factor for our economy is the generation of tax revenue. The sports betting market produces $150 billion every year. If this were taxable, the money could fulfill public needs such as, road and education, both necessary parts of our infrastructure, along with a multitude of other economic problems.
  • Hmm... I guess you have a good point. It does seem like it would benefit our economy overall, but how can an average citizen like me personally benefit or profit from this? There has to be Americans financially hurting as well, right?
  • Well you see, there's way more benefits than tax returns! Legalizing sports betting has the capacity to decrease the unemployment rate. Countless jobs can be implemented for millions of Americans! It offers jobs such as a sports betting manager, agent supervisor, director, predictive analyst, and more. And what's even better is that all of this labor income is taxable by the government, which makes our economy even more prosperous.
  • Oh wow! I had no idea that legalizing sports betting could open up so many jobs. However, I still do have my own 9-5 job. How can I still make money off of this without losing my financial stability? Is it possible to use it as an additional source of income rather than a main source?
  • That sounds great. I definitely could work that into my schedule without sacrificing my free time from other hobbies of mine. I have always loved watching sports, but after losing money from betting, it has been hard for me to get back into it. How will legalizing this prevent middle class citizens like me from losing large sums of money?
  • Yes! Sports betting offers U.S. citizens primary sources of income as well as additional sources. Those who have several children to support or a medical issues that forces them to stay home, or simply a 9-5 job like you, can easily become involved. Americans have the option to create their own work schedule that is convenient for them. Sports betting has gravitated towards online betting over the years, so it is very accessible at any given time.
  • That's exactly my point. There is a high possibility that United States citizens can become out of control financially WITHOUT rules and regulations. However, by legalizing this practice, professionals are able to control the sports betting market, and control Americans from wasting their money, and rather allow them to make immense personal profits.
  • Thank you for explaining the advantages and disadvantages of legalizing sports betting. I feel that I can now agree the pros outweigh the cons overall. Sports betting is a very beneficial practice for our economy as a whole, and every state should be legalized in the near future.
