Hi. My name is Dr. Brown and I am looking forward to working with you. I understand you have been having feelings of possible depression and anxiety. This is very common in young teenagers so do not feel like you're alone. My office is a safe place and I am here to listen and offer any advice you would like. Have a seat.
Good afternoon Dr. Brown. Yes, I have been very anxious and sad lately. I feel like I am missing out and everyone around me is experiencing all the fun things in life while I sit back and watch. I do not know what to do about it so I came here.
Well you have come to the right place. I think what you are experiencing FOMO also known as fear of missing out. Oftentimes, this occurs is young adults due to social media. Do you feel that you spend a lot of your time on apps like Instagram, Snapchat, and Til Tok?
Yes. I started using it as a way to connect with my peers, but now I am always on it. It used to make me happy, but seeing everyone having fun and not being included has put me in a bad place. I can't help but constantly check to see what everyone is doing.
I understand. Social media has become a big problem in todays society. Many young teens have become reliant and cannot go a day without it. Something that you can is limit your screen time, and try to become involved in other activities possibly through your school. This way, you can connect with your peers without having these feelings of sorrow and anxiety.
Thank you. I will try that. I also haven't been eating much. Whenever I look in the mirror, I do not like the way that I look, and I feel like the only solution is to not eat as much. Do you think this could have something to with social media as well?
I am very sorry to hear that. I can assure you that is not necessary. And to answer your question, yes. Social media has very harmful effects on young adults mental health. It not only causes anxiety and depression, but eating disorders as well.
Oh no. I wish I didn't let it get this bad. I never realized how powerful social media can be. I'm sad, not eating, and on top of all that my grades are suffering. I used to be a straight A student, and now I am barely getting by.
Don't worry. There are many things we can do to fix this. Like I said, limit your screen time. I can also refer you to a nutritionist that will helping with your eating disorder. As far as grades, there are plenty of resources at our school to boost your grades, and if you spend less time on social media, you can focus more on your schoolwork.
Thank you so much. That makes me feel a lot better. I really had no hope that I could escape this feeling. I am really glad I met with you and learned about the negative impacts of social media. I look forward to seeing you again Dr. Brown.
It is very important to educate our students and patients on how social media can hurt our mental health. It lest them know they are not alone and there are ways to heal.
