- Annie had no idea there were gay people when she was growing up; she had no idea they existed. All she knew was that A Boy loved a girl and a girl loved a boy, they married and had children, and that was the conclusion of it.
- She realized that she was not like everyone else and that she had different feelings. She was aware that she was different, but she had no idea how.
