  • Welcome to the bike park! Almost everything that happens here is physics related! Let me show you!First things first, it's important to understand a couple things; force is a push or pull and mass is a measure of the amount of 'stuff' contained in an object. Now that you know the basics, let's get a little deeper. Newton's 1st Law / Law of Inertia states that an object continues at a state of rest or motion at a constant speed, unless compelled to change by a net force. For example, my bike will remain in motion at the constant speed I'm pedaling at along a straight line unless a net force, such as a ramp, causes my motion to change.
  • One more term you may need to know is acceleration; the rate of change of velocity per unit of time. Newton's 2nd Law states that when a net external force acts on an object of mass, the acceleration that results is directly proportional to the net force and has a magnitude that is inversely proportional to the mass. The direction of the acceleration is the same as the direction of the net force. For example, my bike's mass multiplied by my bike's acceleration equals the force at which I pushed my bike.
  • Last but not lest, Newton's 3rd Law states that whenever one body exerts a force on a second body, the second body exerts an opposing force of equal magnitude on the first body. This is also known as the 'action-reaction' law. When the action force and reaction force are the same, a state of equilibrium is reached. For example, the force I need to pedal my bike forward, which is the force that the tire exerts on the ground, is equal to the force of the ground pushing against my bike's tire.
