  • She grew up in Poughkeepsie, New York, where her father was a prominent lawyer. Bolin always was attracted by her father's legal office, which was surrounded by books. She went to school and sought out in pursuit of higher education.
  • I LOVE THE LAW
  • April 11, 1908 - January 8, 2007.
  • Jane Bolin, however, was vividly aware of the harsh reality beyond her father's library. She remembered the looks from her neighbors and the sporadic service refusal at nearby shops like the beauty parlor.
  • Later on at the age of 16, Bolin became one of two African-American freshmen at Wellesley College. Jane Bolin describes how it seemed that she was effectively barred from participating in university social events and her negative experience with her guidance counselor.
  • I do not think you should go to law school. Shouldn't you become a school teacher? It would be unpleasant to hear everything lawyers talk about.

  • Bolin experienced prejudice from her peers when she was in law school. Students even slammed classroom doors in her face as well as discriminated against her for being a women of color.
  • Before law school Jane Bolin originally wanted to get into Vassar College, but wasn't able to because they didn't accept black students.
