  • Freud Defense Mechanisms
  • AUSTIN WANG
  • Denial
  • Denial is one of Freud's Defense Mechanisms. It is when a situation or event is too much, so the person just refuses to believe that the event has occurred, creating a state of denial. In this example, the student can't accept that he has failed the test, and denies that the event has even occurred, displaying Freud's defense mechanism of denial.
  • I DIDN'T fail that test.
  • Repression
  • Repression is one of Freud's Defense Mechanisms. It happens when a threatening event is forgotten by a person, but can still be remembered in unconscious. In this example, the person was bitten by a spider at a young age, and now has a fear of spider's but doesn't remember why because of repression.
  • OWWW I got bitten by a spider!!!!!
  • I'm really scared of this spider, but I don't know why!
  • Projection
  • Denial is one of Freud's Defense Mechanisms. It occurs when an individual attributes unwanted thoughts and feelings onto another person. In this example, the student projects his angry emotions about failing the test onto another student, even though he also failed, displaying Freud's defense mechanism of projection.
  • But he failed too.
  • You're so stupid! You failed the test!
  • Displacement
  • Displacement is one of Freud's Defense Mechanisms. It occurs when a person releases their emotions of generally aggression onto themselves or a substitute target who is powerless to stop them. In this example, the student is venting his aggression about his test grade upon another student, displaying displacement upon another innocent student as his substitute.
  • That teacher is so biased!
  • What did I do??
  • Regression
  • Regression is one of Freud's Defense Mechanisms. It occurs when a person reverts to an earlier stage of development where they felt safer. In this example, the student is extremely scared because it is the first day of school, so he reverts back to sucking on his thumb during school even though he hasn't for a very long time.
  • FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL
  • I haven't sucked on my thumb in a long time.
