- Joey's Sad Life Without REAL Love
- Joe Starks walks into Janie’s life at an opportune time. She is regretting her marriage to Logan Killicks and wants to explore the world outside what Logan "allowed" her to have.
- While Joe is growing old, he insults Janie and says that she shouldn't stay young to deflect people from noticing his age, but Janie won’t take it. Eventually, she speaks up even though she had gone through physical abuse when she did. Janie insults his manhood and does it publicly on the porch.
- "Somebody got to think for women and chillun and chickens and cows. I god, sho don't think none theirselves." - chp. 6, p.g 67 (Joe says this to Janie)
- About seven years into their marriage, Joe starts to hit Janie for not preparing his dinner properly, and doing small things wrong. This results in Janie falling out of love over a course of time and because he's actions and words towards her being cruel. She realizes she is saving herself up for some other man, who won't treat her like a slave and domestically abuse her, which is something her grandma didn't want Janie to go through.
