Fredrick Douglass was a slave who had escaped to the North and earned enough money to buy his freedom. (She,459) Many escaped slaves were caught and brought back to the plantation for profit. Therefore, if he bought his freedom, he could not be returned.
During the 19th Century, while there was a separation between free states and slave states, slave owners rationalized slavery as the will of God and believed they were not wrong. (Shi,462) White men wanted to believe they were the superior race, and when God was brought into the argument, many agreed.
African Americans outwitted their captures due to crucial planning and abolitionists' help, creating the Underground Railroad. (She,460) While African Americans were oppressed and subjected to a horrific life as a slave, they persisted and fought for their freedom.
