Diego Valesquez appointed Hernan Cortez, his secretary, to carry out this voyage. However, during the conquest Cortez dismissed himself of commands from Valesquez and did as he pleased.

From a magician, Montezuma was told that a god would return in the year 1590, the same year Cortez arrived so it made him believe that Cortez was a spiritual being, He welcomed the Spaniards in a friendly manner for a week before they captured Montezuma who then forfeited to the Spaniards.
Cortez sailed to the Gulf of Mexico. He was gifted several items including a woman, La Malinche, who would serve as his translator for this trip. After this, they marched to Technochitlan.
Montezuma's brother, Guatemoc became King after his brother's fate however due to lack of resources the economy was slowly depleting and Cortez was growing. He knew just starving the Aztecs wasn't going to be efficient so he destroyed the civilization and rebuilt a new one on its ruins.
Aztec warriors took action and seized bridges, canals, ships and other means on transport for the Spaniards. Alvarado, the man who Cortez left in charge, held Montezuma hostage until Cortez returned with an army on June 24th 1520.
