Storyboard Text

  • Steph is a basketball player. He decides to warm up for a game by shooting from the 3 point line. He stands 21 feet away from the hoop and is shooting at an angle of elevation of 43 degrees.
  • 43 degrees
  • He wants to find how high up (x) the hoop is, so he uses tangent principle. Therefore, x is equal to tan (43) * 21 = 19.6. Steph determines the hoop is 19.6 feet high.

  • Since Steph can't dunk, he goes to a different court with a hoop that is 10 ft high, so that he can practice from the free throw line. However, he doesn't know where to stand.
  • 48 degrees
  • He knows the angle of elevation of the hoop is 48 degrees, so he uses the tangent formula to find the distance (x) that he should stand from the hoop. He finds that x is equal to: 10/tan(48) = 9.004. So, he needs to stand 9 feet from the hoop.

  • Steph decides to start working on his layups. He wants to find the angle of elevation, which he needs to use to make layups.
  • x
  • He stands 5 feet away from the hoop which is 7 feet high. Using the tan formula, he finds the angle of elevation to be: tan^-1(7/5), which equals 54.46 degrees.
