In The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street by Rod Serling, mankind is its own worst enemy. On Page 86, the aliens tell us that what happens on Maple Street is normal and that backstabbing and completely losing order happens all the time. The aliens also explain that backstabbing and blaming each other happens to everyone and at any time, that anyone can backstab and blame someone else. Continuing, throughout the teleplay we get a lot of blaming and guessing on who could be the monster, during the start of blaming each other, the residents are quick to blame Les Goodman because his car started and nobody else could start their car. Later that night they continue to question Les Goodman until it turns out Charlie had the lights in his house start up when he wasn't even in the house. A little after this happens, Pete Van Horn returns from scouting to see if any other streets didn't have electricity or power, the residents quickly believe he's the monster and without a second thought Charlie shot Pete Van Horn and killed him. After shooting Pete Van Horn, the resident quickly blame Charlie and they all start to fight, and they even assume a young boy was the monster for knowing that this would happen because of a comic book. After all this they would start to throw rocks and start chaos that would end and they cause a lot of destruction among their street by destroying windows, vandalizing houses, fighting each other and much more.
