Alone by Edgar Allan Poe SMILE Analysis (Victória Júlia)
IThe poem presents elements of nature, which can fit into sight, sound and smell. The poem image is created by the expressions/words: stormy (smell, sound), red cliff of the mountain (sight), autumn tint of gold (sight), the lightning in the sky (sight), thunder (sound), and cloud that took the form of a demon in my view (sight).
Meaning: By the first line of the poem, the speaker uses From childhood's hour, to express how he/she had felt outside of the box ever since he/she can remember. The poem continues to show that what made the speaker feel different and distant from other people was having a different perspective until the 11th line, in which the speaker refers to the feeling of not belonging as the mystery that binds me still, revealing an attempt to find out where did that different way of seeing things come from. It can be assumed that the speaker does not see being different as a good thing because the whole poem has a tone of loneliness, not solitude, the speaker emphasizes it by showing how lots of things exist around him/her, but what holds his/her attention are things that can be considered bad, namely And the cloud that took the form (When the rest of Heaven was blue) Of a demon in my view.. There is so much happening in the world, the speaker could have been contemplative about the beauty of nature, but instead, he/she sees a demon in a place a demon shouldn't be. Maybe the demon is on his way of viewing things, maybe he/she has a mental illness.
MTheme: Loneliness caused by a feeling of disconnection.
