This is the start of Macbeth's descent. It all started when the witches told him he was gonna be thane of glamis, thane of cawdor, and king. If the witches never told him this news he probably would’ve never even thought about killing king Duncan. This little event is what starts up the idea of killing king Duncan for Macbeth and this is a key moment because it just sets in motion to the rest of the events that split Macbeth's sanity in half.
All hail Macbeth! Hail to thee, thane of Cawdor all hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter.
Yet let that be which the eye fears, when it is done, to see.
His wife is now introduced and at this point in the play Lady Macbeth is on board and plans to help Macbeth with killing the king. It’s important that she is involved now because she is an instigator. and soon forces him to do his murders he planned even though he tries to back out.in the end she left him with no ultimatums and that caused the guilt to be greater on Macbeth then it should’ve been. When she was involved it caused nothing but more stress from every aspect for Macbeth.
Now this time he’s not only just thinking but actually planning. This is an important part of the play because the idea of killing king Duncan is no longer just a fantasy to Macbeth and now is turning into a plan for him. This really displays how Macbeth went from a loyal, happy, family man to a vicious, greedy, killer. this is very small turn for Macbeth's mental's state but still crucial.
my dearest Duncan comes here tonight. tomorrow as he proposes.
and when goes hence?o' never shall that sun see morrow.
At this point he was nervous and scared but still killed king Duncan the reason this makes a key moment in the play is cause he soon starts to feel guilty and paranoid he’s hearing voices cry out about him calling out what he’s doing. This is also important because he hears them calling out “that soothes our worries' ' he feels guilty about killing them in their sleep because when you sleep it's the one time you pray and hope to stay safe. Macbeth's mental is slowly worsing through the guilt and paranoia fighting against it.
“i thought i heard a voice sleep no more Macbeth is murdering sleep innocent sleep. Sleep that soothes away all our worries
This highlights a point of his madness because he feels never ending guilt and he has nightmares throughout the night. He states he rather be dead then deal with these which means they are mentally draining him and his will to live. So in other words the guilt is eating him alive.
Here we will eat our meals in fear and sleep in affliction of these terrible dreams that shake us nightly. Better to be with the dead
The castle of macduff i will surprise seize upon fife, give to th’ edge o’ th’ sword. His wife, his babes, and all unfortunate souls that trace him in his line.”
He’s completely lost it at this point he wants to murder anyone in his wife and his rivals family. He at this point is fully insane and is a complete tyran and abuses his power mostly to just maintain it.
