- In chapter one the author introduced a ten year old boy Bud Caldwell. This story takes place during the great depression and Bud has no parents and in an orphanage.

- In chapter 3 Bud was trapped inside the shed that the Amoses put him in and Bud was certain that there was a vampire bat in the shed so Bud hit it with a rake and it was a wasp nest and it stung him about a million times.

- In chapter 8 Bud was trying to catch a train going west with Bugs his best friend but he didn't make so as Bugs went west Bud went back to the cardboard jungle as the police burned it down.
- In chapter 10 Bud meets Lefty Lewis and he convinces Bud to get into his car instead of walking all the way to Grand Rapids. When Bud gets into the car he sees a cooler that reads human blood and so Bud had met a vampire
- In Chapter 12 Bud meets Herman E. Calloway and Bud is convinced that he is his father but Herman denies it. Bud also meets the band members who are Mr.Jimmy, doo doo bug, steady eddie, the thug and dirty deed.
