- Thomas Jefferson wanted to expand the United States and was thinking of ways to do so. So he decided to buy the Louisiana Purchase
- Lousiana Purchase - 1803
- Lewis and Clark spent their 123 miles out of 8000 in Kansas. They loved the land and thought it was beautiful.

- First american to travel the territory by land and described the land as a dry desert. He wanted the land to be cultivated.

- Traveled by a steam boat, labeled kansas on the map as "The Great American Desert". The view of Kansas influenced the government to settle policies.

- The government didn't think that the Americans could survive and farm on the land so they would force the East American Indians to Kansas and other areas, this would called tension between tribes.
