  • The Monsters Due on Maple Street" by Rod Serling, one of the main themes is "Mankind is its worst enemy." On page 76, Les Goodman's car turns on after he told everyone that he had no gas and everyone started blaming him. This shows how mankind is its worst enemy because they all started blaming Les even though he wasn't the alien. On Page 81, the group is talking about how Steve is always working on a radio set in his garage at night and everybody became suspicious of Steve being the alien. This shows that mankind is its worst enemy because the group needed a scapegoat so that they wouldn't be suspicious so they blamed it on Steve. On page 83, Charlie's lights in his house turns on after he shot Pete Van Horn and everyone starts to blame him for being the monster and using Pete Van Horn as a scapegoat. This shows that mankind is its worst enemy because they all started blaming Charlie even though they had no real proof he was the alien. In conclusion, mankind is its worst enemy because in the teleplay they all started blaming each other and turning on each other even though none of them were the monster.
