Tessie complains about it being unfair that her family is now participating in the lottery. She says that Bill wasn't given enough time to choose the slip. However, no one is listening and is continuing with the second phase of the lottery. Bill states the number of people in his family and 5 slips of paper is added back into the black box along with the one dotted paper. The Hunchinsons prepare to draw and the winner this time will be the one dying.
“You didn’t give him time enough to take any paper he wanted. I saw you. It wasn’t fair!”

“Ready, Bill?” Mr. Summers asked, and Bill Hutchinson, with one quick glance around at his wife and children, nodded.
The Huntchinsons have all drawn their slips and they are instructed to reveal the slips one by one. Tessie is the last to show hers and her paper has the dotted spot which Bill realved. The people of the town know what comes next.

The citizens of the town begin to grab the stones that had been gathered up in the center. Everyone is working together to finish fast so they can get on with work. Since Tessie won the lottery they will give her what she has won in this case it is getting stoned. Tessie however, tries one last time to convince them it wasn't fair, and taking part in the lottery isn't right.
