  • Long Term Memory and Short Term Memory University of the Commonwealth CaribbeanArs Memorativa - The Act of Remembering, Chidie Davy-Mckoy20195657, Cognition and the Brain - PSY305Professor: Dr. Bird-PickensMarch 22, 2023
  • Introduction
  • Theoretical stances and broad definitions of short-term and long-term memory will be examined in the following storyboard. The contribution of short and long term memory to cognitive psychology The results of the topic will also be evaluated utilizing the guidelines and suggestions related to its function in cognitive psychology. Not to mention influential pioneers in the study of memory within cognitive psychology and well-known experimental methods, all of which will be discussed later.
  • Morning Hall
  • Good Morning StudentsI am Dr. Yates. I am a Psychologist. I'm here to discuss Short and Long Memory.
  • Morning Hall
  • Memory is an important cognitive process for humans, divided into two types: long-term and short-term. Short-term memory is the ability to hold a small amount of information in mind for a brief time, usually less than 30 seconds. while long-term memory is divided into two sub-types: explicit memory and implicit memory.(Cowan, 2008)
  • Morning Hall
  • Talks about the contribution to the study of memory, we can't ignore the groundbreaking work of Dr. Eric Kandel. He won a Nobel Prize for his research that revealed how our brains store memories. His experiments on sea slugs showed that they were able to form new neural connections after experiencing a stimulus, like a tap on the tail (Dobbs, 2007) . These connections grew stronger with repetition and eventually led to long-term memories. This discovery laid the foundation for further research into how memory works in more complex organisms, including humans.
  • Morning Hall
  • Dr. Kandel's findings have helped us understand the molecular mechanisms behind learning and memory formation, as well as conditions like Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. Thanks to his contributions, we now know much more about how our brains retain information and what factors can impair or enhance our ability to remember things over time.
  • After Morning Hall
  • Trina: Guys Dr. Yates was so informative
  • Amanda: yea, like short-term memory is essential for cognitive psychology,
  • Hanna: Long-term memory is essential for learning, problem-solving, and creativity, influencing how we think and reason about new situations.
  • Class Session
  • Cognitive psychology and forensic psychology have some similarities, but also some significant differences. Both fields deal with the workings of the human mind, including thought processes and behavior(Cherry, 2023).
  • Class Session
  • Memory is an essential component of cognitive psychology, which is the study of mental processes such as perception, thinking, and problem-solving. Memory refers to the ability to store and retrieve information over time(The Derek Bok Center for Teaching and Learning, 2023). It involves a complex process that starts with encoding information into memory stores, maintaining it for some time and retrieving it when necessary. Several principles govern memory formation and retrieval such as attention, organization, elaboration (processing information in depth), and repetition.
  • Break -Time
  • Alexus: It helps us hold information in our mind as we move through the steps,
  • Amanda: Wow this topic is so interesting. We have been talking all day. Dr. Yates has offer so much knowledgeAlexus: I am intrigued by it all. If you're looking for ways to improve your memory, there are plenty of simple but effective techniques you can try. First and foremost, staying engaged and mentally challenged is crucial for continued advancement in memory. You can accomplish this through activities such as reading books, solving puzzles or crosswords, learning a new skill or taking up a musical instrument – anything that keeps your mind active and stimulated.
  • Physical Education
  • Alexus: She told us cognitive psychology is primarily concerned with understanding mental processes such as perception, memory, attention, and problem solving. Forensic psychology focuses on applying psychological principles to legal issues such as criminal investigation, criminal profiling, and courtroom testimony.Amanda: yea and cognitive psychologists primarily conduct research in laboratories or academic settings while forensic psychologists work in legal settings such as courtrooms, jails or law enforcement agencies. Trina : I would love to do something like that when i grow up.Hanna: You know both fields require specialized training and education beyond a general degree in psychology. In conclusion Cognitive and forensic psychologies may share is that they provide insight into the working of the human mind but differ significantly in their focus areas and practical applications.
  • Lets Go LIONLets GO!!!
  • Let Out
  • Trina : Different types of memories have been identified based on duration and content like sensory memory, short-term memory (working memory) and long-term memory (permanent storage) (Stangor Walinga, n.d.).Hanna: Guys you know the role of schemas or knowledge structures in shaping our memories has also been studied extensively(Wray, 2020,35-54). Understanding the mechanisms by which humans encode, store and retrieve information is essential for addressing cognitive issues related to learning disabilities or aging-related dementia while also enhancing our everyday cognitive capacities.
  • Hanna: Another recommendation is adopting a healthy lifestyle that includes regular exercise, eating nutritious foods, maintaining quality sleep habits, minimizing stressors and abstaining from alcohol consumption or drug use. Additionally, practicing mindfulness and meditation can help sharpen your focus and attention while reducing anxiety levels which could negatively impact memory function.Trina: I think by incorporating these recommendations into our daily routine, we can enjoy lifelong benefits in personal and professional pursuits that demand optimal mental agility.
  • Alexus: Coach you know that while physical education is good for the body; therapy grounded in memory is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)(Chand et al., 2023). CBT aims to identify and transform unhealthy thought patterns that contribute to mental health issues, such as anxiety or depression. It involves examining negative thoughts and memories and challenging them with logic and evidence-based reasoning. Trina: Yes Sir, Through techniques like exposure therapy, persons are encouraged to confront their fears or trauma-related memories in a safe environment. In doing so, they can cope with distressing emotions and rewrite their narrative around those events (American Psychological Association, 2017).
  • Trina: Talk to you later guys.
  • Amanda: Later
  • Alexus: Ya guys later
  • Hanna: See you
  • HOME
  • That sounds amazing sweetie. Join me in the kitchen and tell me all about it
  • Good Evening Mom, Im super excited to tell you about today at school. An actual doctor was there.

  • We learn In order to develop new memories, information must first be encoded. Memory is the psychological process of gathering, storing, maintaining, and retrieving information. Cognitive and forensic psychology have similarities, but differ in their focus areas and practical applications. Cognitive psychology focuses on understanding mental processes, while forensic psychology applies psychological principles to legal issues. To improve memory, it is important to stay engaged and mentally challenged through activities such as reading books, solving puzzles or crosswords, learning a new skill or taking up a musical instrument.
  • In adopting a healthy lifestyle and practicing mindfulness and meditation can help sharpen focus and attention while reducing anxiety levels. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a type of therapy that aims to identify and transform unhealthy thought patterns that contribute to mental health issues, such as anxiety or depression. Through exposure therapy, patients are encouraged to confront their fears or trauma-related memories in a safe environment. Ultimately, the goal is to empower patients by giving them tools to change the way they think about themselves and their experiences, leading to more positive outcomes.
