"I could've got you a drink if you were that thirsty"
"Bring me back my change"
"You should have said sorry"
"I didn't mean it
"Can I get one?"
Here Leonie depicts Jojo as a typical teenager who is spoiled and egoistic. But in reality that is not who Jojo is. Leonie has not been around Jojo enough to see who is really is. So Leonie just assumes all of these things from the little things Jojo does whenever he is around Leonie. We can see examples of this in the book when Leonie leaves after Mam dies, she leaves with Michael for comfort and in the end never gets to make it right with her kids. If Leonie had cared enough or seen Jojo enough she would have seen that Jojo has grown taller and has trouble fitting in cramped places such as her car. Jojo even admitted to it even though he did not. It shows how good of a kid Jojo is because he could have argued well within his right to Leoninie that he did not kick her seat at all.
The second scene where we see Jojo asking for water shows Leonie's ego of caring for herself and Michael:“Can I have one?” I push. I can imagine the dark burning sweetness of it. I swallow and my throat seems to catch like Velcro.I think I know what the parched man felt like. “Bring me my change"(64). Here Leonie had a oppurtunity to act like a mother and give Jojo money to buy him a drink which would have made Jojo like Leonie more and make Jojo take the first steps to acknowdlege Leonie as a mother. Misty even asked Jojo if he was thirsty even though Jojo does not know her well or had asked her. Even the lawer cares more as he made them dinner.
