  • LOI - 2CONNECTIONIs animal extinction a result of disturbing a food chain or food web?
  • Yes, we have learned from our UOI classes that animal Extinction imposes a major threat to the planet and its ecosystems. A disturbed food chain or food web is one of the major causes of animal extinction. Whether a disrupted or disturbing food chain or food web happens by human-induced factors or by natural means, these factors contribute directly to animal extinction, therefore, affecting a food chain or food web. This can lead to an imbalance of the whole ecosystem.
  • When this happens, one prey species decreases in population or even goes extinct, other predator species that relied on the prey species as a food source may also be in serious trouble since their food supply diminished or even vanished due to disruptions of the food chain/food web, leading to many plants and animal species to become endangered or even extinct as a result of chain reactions.
  • For example, in a three-level food chain, the fruits from plants can be referred to as producers, the monkeys who consume them can be called omnivores and a cheetah who preys on the monkey is a predator. So, if the monkeys are declining in population because of environmental factors or human-induced activities, this means that the Cheetah would relocate and migrate to a new habitat and begin to prey on other animals that have existing predators. This means the omnivores in their new habitat will increase or decrease because there are more predators causing a chain reaction where many species are likely to become endangered or extinct.
  • A Simple three-level food chain
  • Whenever the natural habitats of animals are being destroyed, evidently, the food chain/food web is disturbed greatly causing an imbalance in the ecosystem. Eventually, this leads to the extinction of animal species that will certainly have a fatal impact on the whole wildlife and ultimately the human race as well.Disturbed food chain/food web effect may overall bring an ecosystem out of balance, which may lead to serious consequences for our environment as a whole.
