  • Hi Mr. Johnson, the doctor said that she will be prescribing some medications to treat your heart failure. Do you have any questions?
  • Yes I do.What are these medications? And what do they do?
  • So there are many different kinds of heart failure meds because they all work on certain things. There ACE inhibitors which relaxes blood vessels which lowers you blood pressure. There are also Beta-blockers and they also lower blood pressure and slows your heart rate.A Diuretic, or water pill decreases swelling by getting rid of extra fluid and less fluid means less work for your heart. When taking a diuretic, you might be prescribed a Potassium supplement to keep sodium levels low.Digoxin helps your heart pump more blood with each beat so more oxygen gets to your body. Blood thinners help prevent clots and Hydralazine and nitrates also lower your blood pressure.
  • Wow thanks. Nurse! Knowing why I'm taking a medication helps me remember how important taking the prescribed dose at the correct time is.
  • You're welcome and yes, medication only works if we take them as prescribed!
