I have reached my limit on terms for governor. I will no longer be the Governor of Georgia, but I will continue to support gaining civil rights for African Americans.*crowd boos* God bless Georgia!
I will be running for governor in the next *coughs* election. I will *coughs* restore white primary!
Later, Eugene Talmadge won the election. He passed away before he was put into office. According to the constitution, it says if the governor dies, the lieutenant governor, Melvin Thompson, takes over. In this case though, Eugene Talmadge was never sworn into office. Many of Talmadge's supporters saw that his passing was coming because he was sick, so they put in his son's name, Herman Talmadge, on the gubernatorial ballot. Both Melvin Thompson and Herman Talmadge believed they had the right to be in office. The general assembly was in favor of Talmadge. Meanwhile, Ellis Arnall was angry with this situation and refused to step down as governor unless Melvin Thompson became governor. Herman Talmadge became governor and kicked Ellis Arnall out of the capital building.
In March 1947, it was ruled by the supreme court that Melvin Thompson is the rightful governor since he won the election as lieutenant governor. He would remain in this position until there was a special election the Herman Talmadge won and become governor.
