  • How it started, 1848
  • He started to feel better but something wasn't right, 1848
  • He's gone but not forgotten, 1868
  • On September 13, 1848, a man called Phineas Gage was working on a railroad. However, something horrific happens as he is constructing. Phineas was in charge of black gunpowder that is used for shattering rocks. He used a metal rod that would be used to put black powder for a fuse, but someone distracted him. Which resulted in the black powder going through the wrong side of the tamping iron and striking a granite causing the tamping iron to go through his head.  It went under his left cheekbone, pass behind his left eye, through the front of his brain, and out the middle forehead just above the hairline.
  • Shortly after the incident, Dr. Harlow checks Phineas. It shocked Dr. Harlow that Phineas was still alive. After 2 weeks of Dr. Harlow addressing the wounds, Dr. Harlow said Phineas has fully recovered. Even though Phineas is weak he can still do things for himself. However, Phineas didn't act like his usual self. He would act like a child, making decisions but canceling them after. He couldn't control what he said, or how he acted. He also became bipolor.
  • When Dr. Harlow tried to contact Phineas after he left for South America, he is too late. Dr, Harlow heard from Phineas's mother that He had passed 6 years before Dr. Harlow contacted Mrs. Gage. That does not stop Dr. Harlow however, he asks Mrs. Gage if he can dig up Phineas's. grave and send his skull to the University of Harvard. Sure enough, Mrs. Gage said yes, and with Phineas was the tamping iron next to his body. On the top of his skull was the huge hole from the accident.  Phineas had lost how to mix emotions. He had changed due to the hole in his head.
