The fine, bluish mist that lay low over the tobacco fields was gradually lifting and thinning. Soon, the sun will rise above the Katayaghan hills, but nobody was there yet. Hens remained perched as roosters strutted and croaked on the ground.
It was sunrise in Nagrebcan
Nana Elang, the mother of Baldo, now appeared in the doorway with handful of rice straw. She called Baldo and told him to get some live coals from their neighbor.
“Get two or three burning coals and bring them home on the rice straw,”
Okay Mother!
Standing at the doorway, Baldo wiped his tired eyes with his fists. He had a tiny build for his age, must have been around ten, and stood straight on his skeletal legs. He was dressed in a cotton undershirt that belonged to his father.
Baldo was first struck by Tang Ciaco. After receiving many blows, he collapsed to his knees and dialed his mother for assistance. However, Tang Ciaco hit the firewood at Ambo as he hurried to Nana Elang. Tang Ciaco pushed baldo in her direction as Nana Elang raced to Ambo, then he swore and went back to their house.
Baldo and his brother placed the puppy into the hole when they had done their task. After stamping on the grave until the disturbed ground was level once more, they covered the dog with soft earth. Ambo and Baldo ran up to the home together after Baldo put an arm around his shoulders.
