My name is Serena Williams and my name is of Italian origin that represents serene, peaceful, quiet, and tranquility. My mother named me after the great Serena Williams, the tennis player, my father wanted to name me Georgette Williams because his name is George Williams. Growing up, I did not realize I was named after a famous person until my second-grade teacher told me.
My mother sees Serena Williams as an inspiration to black and white people all over the world, Serena Williams talks openly about racial equality, she is serious about closing the gender pay gap and helping women, and is a philanthropist such as the UNICEF goodwill ambassador which aim to provide equal education to children, she also invests in women and minority-owned businesses through her company Serena Ventures. From my childhood until now, having a name of such magnitude and power has always made me stand out from my peers, most of my appointments where my name is called such as dentist, doctor, etc… I always get compliments about my famous name.
I was born and raised in Jamaica until I migrated to the United States when I was thirteen years old, my childhood in Jamaica was fantastic, especially in my neighborhood Rock Road Drive Clarendon after coming from school, doing my homework and chores. I was off to play with my friends playing various games and sports such as hopscotch, double dutch, playing soccer, running track and field, and going on swings.
On Saturdays, we normally ride our bikes, swim in the river, and catch crawfish. On Sundays, we attend Sunday school in the morning and then church service afterward. On Sunday evenings, after dinner, we normally buy ice cream from the ice cream truck and then chill out mainly going to a soccer match in our neighborhood because there is a big soccer field and other neighborhoods always come to that soccer field to play matches.
At the age of Seven when I was living in Jamaica and going to private school my mother chartered a taxi for me to and from school every day, on this particular Friday my taxi driver took long to come for me so I decided to leave the school premises and took public transportation home by myself.
I took two buses home which was very dangerous for my age, when I reached home and my parents found out what I did, my father gave me a fine beating for the first and last time in my life. By getting older, watching the news on tv, reading the newspaper, and listening to people about pedophiles, the sex trade, and how they kidnap children. I understand why my parents were so protective of me.
Growing up as an only child, I was able to get my parent’s undivided love and attention, my parents weren’t rich but they provided for my needs, and I was sent to one of the best private elementary school. I was able to be more independent by taking care of myself and tried making the right decisions. Moreover, I was able to relate well to adults because I was always exposed to my mother and her friends with their various conservations about life journey that entails relationships, careers, and finances this enabled me to be more mature in the sense of going out in the real world later on in life, and how to handle situations that arise.
I considered myself at an early age up until now, that I am an introvert, I enjoy spending time with myself, thinking, being self-aware, having few friends, taking time to make decisions, and needing quiet space to concentrate which gives satisfaction.
The advice I got from my mother throughout my childhood up until now is, to always put God first, be respectful to others, and aim at your true potential. Don’t underestimate yourself and your abilities, and always ask questions if you don’t understand something even if people think you are annoying, it is better to be safe than sorry.
When choosing a partner, don’t choose someone who talks down to you, someone who is egoist, someone who does not support and understand me or my aspirations in life. Furthermore, she emphasis on being independent, self-sufficient, and capable of making the right choices in life
When I graduated high school in 2019, I attended Kingsborough Community College. I received my Associate’s Degree in Early Childhood and Education/ Child Care with honors, and receiving my first degree made me feel like I was a cloud nine. There were times I wanted to give up but having the support of my parents and family gave me the motivation to keep going
The tears, frustration, and asking God to grant me the strength, motivation, and determination to study and put effort into assignments and projects were not easy. Walking across the stage, gave me the enthusiasm, self-confidence, belief, and ambition to further my education.
When I migrated from Jamaica to the United States and entered Middle School I got a culture shock, from the behaviors of students in the classroom and with teachers, most of the students didn’t respect teachers and authority. From my experience in Jamaica, devotions are held every morning outside among students, teachers, and the school body where they sing and say their morning prayers.
When entering their various classrooms, they greet each other and also tell their teachers good morning. When lunchtime is finished and classes resume, students say a little prayer by thanking God for their lunch, when it’s time for school to end, students say a little prayer thanking God for the end of the school day.
The End !
