In 1815, Thomas Gallaudet set out for England in hopes of learning a way of communicating with a deaf child, Alice Cogswell.
I'm not satisfied with this oral communication... there must be another way to talk with her...
Arrival
Gallaudet comes across the Braidwood family, who teach deaf children how to lip-read. Due to his lack of funds, the family refuses to teach Thomas the skill.
Meeting
I'm sorry, but you just lack the funds to be able to learn the skills we teach.
I can't stay in England much longer with these funds... perhaps Clerc would like to come back with me?
French Signer
Gallaudet meets Laurent Clerc, a Frenchman who is able to sign.
Clerc agrees to depart to the Americas with Gallaudet; teaching him sign language along the way. Gallaudet teaches him English in return.
Departure
Fascinating... speaking with the hands?
Gallaudet and Clerc establish the American School for the Deaf in 1817. Clerc becomes the first American Deaf teacher.
Establishment
And from that day on, Gallaudet University would be one of America's largest Deaf schools.
