  • Gentrification occurs when a poor urban area experiences an influx of wealthier residents and buyers who renovate the area, therefore raising the price of land and rent and pushing the poorer residents out. For example, this process takes place in many poorer areas in San Francisco, California. This image demonstrated gentrification as it shows wealthier residents (left) renovating the landscape and pushing out low-income residents and renters (right) as they renovate.
  • Tenements
  • A greenbelt is an area surrounding, by, or within a city where buildings are restricted in order to preserve the natural landscape. An example of this would be Canada's greenbelt that stretches across Ontario. The image above accurately represents a greenbelt because it shows the discontinued urban space (the parking lot) for the purpose of preserving the landscape (the trees in the background).
  • Gated Community
  • I love our new fence!
  • It'll keep the birds out.
  • A CBD, or Central Business District, is the main commercial business area of a city, often home to offices and commercial spaces. An example of a Central Business District in New York is Midtown and downtown Manhattan. The image above shows a CBD because of the large clustering of tall office buildings and workers.
  • New Urbanism
  • Mr. Warmerdam is the best AP Hug teacher.
  • Tenements are residential systems in which one building is divided into multiple dwellings or apartments. Many tenements are present in Chicago in America. The image above represents tenements because the houses are all one large building that has been divided into multiple dwellings.

  • A gated community is a residential community surrounded by gates or barriers to control the movement of people going into it. Gated Communities are abundant in the Florida Suburbs in America. The picture above depicts a house surrounded by a gate; a gated community.
  • New Urbanism is a movement within cities that promotes environmental sustainability and walkable neighborhoods. New Urbanism is especially prominent in Tokyo. The image above accurately represents New Urbanism as it shows a walkable area, street signs, and environmental sustainability (the park).
