  • The Toledo heroines were three women: a mother with her twodaughters, natives of the town of Concepción, near Huancayo, in Peru, who stoodout during the War of Independence. The mother was named Cleofé Ramos and herdaughters María and Higinia Toledo, although other versions indicate the namesof Teresa and Rosa for the sisters.
  • The feat of the Toledo heroines took place on March 3 or April 10,1821. After a crossfire from one shore to the other and before the advance of aregiment of hussars from Valdés, who began the crossing, the three women,leading to the defenders of Concepción, they managed to cut the mooring linesof the suspension bridge. Audacious operation that was carried out in the midstof enemy fire, and with such speed that it was concluded in a timely manner.The royalist soldiers who were recklessly advancing over the bridge sank withit in the Mantaro River.
  • The patriots thusmanaged to buy time to withdraw and avoid a corner, and Valdés had to findanother passage to cross the Mantaro River. Whenthe royalists finally entered Concepción, they found it almost depopulated andValdés ordered it to be burned. Its defenders withdrew into the jungle. Thethree heroines survived in indigenous towns until together with the rest of thesettlers they returned to Concepción, which was promptly rebuilt.
  • Doña Cleofémust have been born at the end of the 18th century and the daughters in thefirst decade of the 19th centurywere determined women who encouraged the populations to join the patriotic forces.Thetruth is that the Toledo were aggressive, offensive and rebellious and thatthey supported actions openly or secretly, putting up stubborn resistance torealistic advance on the central highlands.

  • Concepción commemorates these acts and has as recognition a statue of the Heroines Toledo.
