Columbus’ ships landed on an island in the Caribbean Sea, however he believed his crew reached the Indies, and also mistakenly called the Taino people there Indians. Christopher Columbus told his crew to bear witness that he took the island in possession for the king and queen while unfurling the royal banner and flags. He named the Island San Salvador. Columbus took about six or seven Taino as guides as he left for other Caribbean islands eager to reach, what he thought was the “rich country of japan”. Finally Christopher Columbus reached an island which he named Española where he found gold and precious objects convincing him he’d reached Asia. He quickly returned home to report to the king and queen of Spain leaving 39 of his men on the island to later find them murdered when he came back because his crew angered the Taino by stealing them and committing violence.
January 14th 1493, Columbus sailed back to Spain firmly believing he’d found a new trade route to Asia. He wrote to king Ferdinand and queen Isabella and was called in to report on his voyage. Not Columbus or the royals suspected that landed near continents entirely unknown to Europe. Christopher Columbus made three more voyages to the Americas yet didn’t bring the treasures he promised and also failed to meet the queen’s side goal. He was to spread Christianity to new people. When she learned of how badly Columbus mistreated and enslaved the people of Hispañola, she was enraged. After Columbus’ fourth voyage the royals refused to aid his finances .
Christopher Columbus died in 1506 still believing he’d reached a new trade route to Asia, and was extremely bitter that he hadn’t received the fame or fortune he thought he deserved. Over time the geographical knowledge Columbus brought back changed the Europeans views. They soon realized what Columbus reached was continents previously unknown to them. This made them eager to see if they could become rich off of these continents. The Atlantic Ocean became a bridge used to connect Europe, Asia, and the Americas.
