- After the Revolutionary War ended in 1783, James Madison, George Washington, and Alexander Hamlton were worried for America.
- Representation should be based on the population!
- How about each state has one representative for every 300,000 people in the House of Representatives and two in the Senate?
- No! Representation should be divided equally among states!
- The previous document, the Articles of Confederation, had many flaws and wasn't strong enough to govern the country.
- Wow! Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and more people signed this!
- In May 1787, the three men held a Constitutional Convention, in which 55 delegates from the colonies were invited to discuss the problems.
- With so many people discussing the future of the United States, compromises had to be made to satisfy everyone.
- After working hard on devising the terms, the Constitution was finally ready on September 1787. 39 delegates out of the 55 signed the document.
