ARTICLESOFCONFEDERATIONANDPERPETUAL UNIONBETWEEN THESTATES
CONSTITUTION'S CHILDREN BOOKUnit 1 Early American History PBL Activity
After the Revolutionary War ended in 1783, James Madison, George Washington, and Alexander Hamlton were worried for America.
Representation should be based on the population!
How about each state has one representative for every 300,000 people in the House of Representatives and two in the Senate?
No! Representation should be divided equally among states!
The previous document, the Articles of Confederation, had many flaws and wasn't strong enough to govern the country.
Wow! Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and more people signed this!
In May 1787, the three men held a Constitutional Convention, in which 55 delegates from the colonies were invited to discuss the problems.
With so many people discussing the future of the United States, compromises had to be made to satisfy everyone.
After working hard on devising the terms, the Constitution was finally ready on September 1787. 39 delegates out of the 55 signed the document.
