Slide: 1
"Let’s not accuse anyone. It’s probably just unconscious bias."
"I don't think we should hire her... people like her tend to cause problems."
That sounds racist to me, but I don't know if that's what he meant...
Replying back to manager: "Yeah exactly I'm not racist haha"
Narration: Calling discrimination 'unconscious bias' lets people avoid responsibility and makes the behavior seem less harmful
Slide: 2
He only thinks that way because racism doesn't happen to him... but if I call it racism then Mark will feel attacked
Gently: "That comment about her seemed racist to me."
"Racist? Absolutely not! Racism doesn't even exist anymore!"
Narration: People see racism differently. Some minimize it to protect their self-image and others to avoid admitting their privilege.
Slide: 3
She mentioned working with the LGBTQ+ group at her last job... I just don't want her to make things weird.
...that's homophobic, but if I say something, they might think that I am gay, so I should stay silent.
Narration: Some people stay silent because they fear losing social status or being judged, even when they know something is wrong.
