- The story opens in the early dusk of Dublin, Ireland. The Sniper, had a face resembled that of a student, "thin and ascetic" yet had the eyes of a man used to facing death. He's currently fighting in a war between Republicans and Free Staters, fighting for the Republican side.
- The Sniper, observing the city atop a building, goes to take a drink, and hesitantly lights a cigarette, risking being spotted. The Sniper is then fired at and hears the shot whizzing over his head. He had seen the bullet come from the building adjacent to him.
- The Sniper is unaware of his attacker's exact position, but sees an armored vehicle approaching, he realizes he cannot penetrate the reinforced car and does not attempt to shoot it. A woman approaches the vehicle and points to the Sniper's position, she was an informer. The Sniper realizes and quickly takes her and the armored car gunner out with two shots, but is returned a bullet from the other building.
- The Sniper was hit in the arm and could no longer fire his rifle, so he comes up with a plan to fool the attacker. The Sniper quickly wraps up his wound, the puts his hat onto his rifle and pushes it to the edge. The attacker, thinking its the Sniper, fires at the hat. The Sniper drops the rifle off the edge, faking his death.
- The attacker falls for the trick, and the Sniper takes the opportunity. The Sniper pulls out his revolver with his working arm, and takes one final shot, killing the attacker. The Sniper heads off the building, to check if his attacker was killed.
- The Sniper heads down, outrunning the machine gunner shooting him. The Sniper then finds the body, laying dead and cold on the ground beside the building. The Sniper examines the body closer only to find out, it was his brother he had fought to the death.
