  • The Supreme Court ruling was 6-1 in favor of Engel. Justice Black wrote the majority opinion and had the support of Chief Justice Warren and four other judges. Justice Douglas filed his own concurring opinion and Justice Stewart dissented.
  • We agree with Engel, this practice is unconstitutional.
  • The majority Opinion of the Court was that schools run by the government should not have religious activities take place because this favors monotheistic religions and violates the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment. Therefore it is unconstitutional. Combining religion and government is bad for the people. If the government sides with one religion, it leads to hatred and contempt amongst people of other religions towards the government. There is also a lost of respect for that religion. The Concurring Opinion of Justice Douglas was that the state's practice of this religious exercise violates the First Amendment. The Dissenting Opinion of Justice Stewart was that no official religion was established by this prayer.
  • This religious exercise violates the First Amendment.
  • We agree with Engel, this practice is unconstitutional.
  • No religion is being established though.
  • This is a landmark case because it involves the separation of Church and State and upheld the rights of the First Amendment. This case is the reason why Public Schools cannot endorse a specific faith. It is also an example of freedom of religion and that a certain religious activity cannot be mandated on students.
  • We support all religions.
