Hmm, maybe we could go watch a movie? There's also a museum a couple streets from here.
Hey, what's that over there?
I think that's the White House, isn't it?
Oh, that makes sense!
But ... that looks nothing like the White House? Maybe it's some sort of court building?
Actually, that's the Capitol!
Where did she come from? That scared me.
Uhm, who are you?
Oh, I'm sorry! I'm congresswoman Ilhan Omar. I work at the Capitol, that's how I know.
Nice to meet you! My name is Melina. My friends and I are from Germany and here on vacation.
Hey, I'm Farah.
My name is Elias.
And I am Samuel.
Nice to meet you guys.
I'd be happy to tell you!
What even is the Capitol?
The Capitol is a government building that houses both chambers of the legislature.
It's one of the three branches of government alongside the executive and judiciary. Legislators are the people who make laws.In a way you could say that the Capitol is the heart of the american democracy.
Why does it looks so similar to the White House?
What's that?
That's actually a very common misconception! They might look similar on first glance, but they are different in many ways. The White House is the home of the head of the executive branch.I'm sure you know who that is?
That's right!
And what's the last one again? The ju-?
The president!
The judiciary! It's housed in the Supreme Court, where judges or "Supreme Justices" interpret the law and secure equal justice for all.
You said you work at the Capitol, right? What do you do there?
As a congresswoman I work in the House of Representatives. I think it is comparable to being a Bundestagsabgeordneter. The german Bundestag and the american House of Representatives are very much alike. We write and discuss bills and then vote on them. If they get enough votes they move on to the second chamber, the Senate. When a bill passes both the House and the Senate the president can sign it into law.
Glad I could help!
Thank you so much for answering our questions!
Goodbye!
Well...I think there's still time to catch a movie?
