  • To err is human. To forgive is design.
  • Don't kick like that!
  • You're kicking the ball wrong.
  • You're not using enough force.
  • Uh... Coach... how do you want me to kick the ball?
  • We don't ever want patients to feel like that in Tendo. It's easy to tell users they're screwing up, but harder to guide them to do it right. That's where purposeful design comes in.
  • Everybody makes mistakes sometimes.
  • New users because they're not familiar with the app. Experienced users when they aren't paying attention or are using a feature they haven't used before.
  • That's why, like a great coach, we need to proactively design and build ways for users to recover from mistakes so they can accomplish their goals.
  • Tendo BEST PRACTICES
  • Error Handling
  • An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of error handling, so build in constraints, defaults, and auto-corrects that help avoid errors. Focus on the solution, not the user action. Tell users kindly how to fix the specific problem and get on with their task. Don't: Email invalidDo: Format is name@example.comDon't be dramatic. Errors cause enough stress without Tendo hyperventilating. Instead, move users smoothly back to their happy path.
  • Purposeful Lagging
  • Tendo BEST PRACTICES
  • Input form fields sometimes are set to take a specific number or type of characters. When a user starts inputting information into such a field, an in-line error message can appear as soon as they type the first character. This can make them think they've made an error when they just haven't finished typing what they were supposed to.Give them a break by building in a lag between when they start to type and when the error alert appears.
