Bishop Pompallier left Le Harve on the 24th of December 1836 and he left two missionaries in the Wallis and Futana islands. Along the way one of the priests died of a fever.
Finally, i'm leaving on my voyage to a land I believe is called New Zealand. I will hopefully arrive with a short trip of about 2 years.
Hokianga, New Zealand1838
During his time in NZ Bishop Pompallier established many missionary stations. A few of the stations he established were at Hokianga, Tauranga, Whangaroa, Akaroa, Kororāreka and many many more.
New ZealandEarly 1800s
When the Missionaries arrived in NZ maori tended to turn away from churches because they already had their own faith. Maori believed that certain things were tapu such as burial grounds. Although things were different with Christianity, some things were the same and the missionaries had sacred (tapu) things as well such as saying Jesus name in vain. Most of this was very new to maori and some of them werent sure what to think about the arrival of the missionaries.
I find it very odd that the missionaries believe that burial grounds are not tapu!
I know, I find it odd that they do not find most things tapu
