Suyuan is forcing June to participate in various activities in the hopes that she will find something she is really good at and eventually becomes a prodigy at it.
Suyuan sees a show on the TV of a little girl who is really good at playing the piano. Which, is where she gets the idea to have her daughter learn how to play.
June begins her lesson with Mr. Chong who is deaf, and can't actually tell if she's even playing the piano properly.
Suyuan meets with Lindo Jong who continuously brags about her daughter Waverly's talent for playing chess which causes some animosity between the two mothers and daughters.
June participates in a church hall talent show where she plays the piano then messes up in front of everyone and sees she has disappointed her parents especially her mother.
June is shocked when her mother wants her to continue to play. To retaliate June screams at her mother and says she wishes she was dead like the babies Suyuan had left in China. June doesn't play piano again but later on her mother offers her the piano she'd got her when she was little for her 30th birthday.
