  • That won't help, you know. Maybe smudging is allowed at the organization you came from, but certainly not here.
  • I am really not feeling well, nurse. Would I be able to have someone from Indigenous Services perform a smudging ceremony please?
  • Unfortunately, Sam later ended up hospitalized with appendicitis. With his new knowledge of his rights in the healthcare system as a young offender, he self-advocates for being connected to Indigenous Services in the hospital.

  • Hold on! I did my research and know that Indigenous Services in this hospital offers smudging. I also know it is my right to access these traditional healing services while in the hospital!
  • Fine. I can connect you to Indigenous Services, but no guarantees you will get what you want!
  • It was difficult for Sam to advocate for himself with his nurse being unwilling to understand his needs. Despite this, he is glad he spoke up, as it led to the nurse sending a referral to the Indigenous Services department on his behalf.

  • I am so glad I got connected to you, Sam, and I am proud of your self-advocacy! Let's begin the smudging ceremony whenever you are ready.
  • Thankfully, Sam was able to meet Jane, a member of the Indigenous Services department in the hospital. This was a moment that re-enforced all that Sam had learned about his rights as an Indigenous young offender to equitable, culturally-appropriate healthcare!
