- Offed waited for the first available handmaid to go to the market, in accordance with the rules of traveling in her society. She was thankful to have another handmaid ready, because sometimes it could take hours for one to be available.
- As Offred and Ofglen approached the market, they had to give their tokens to the guards to pass through. Offred showed curiosity in the other women waiting to get in, wondering if one of them could be a friend of hers before Gilead formed.
- After getting into the market, Offred notices there is a pregnant handmaid, Janine, who she believes is just showing off her pregnancy. She explains that once women get pregnant, they are cleared from their expectations as a handmaid and often do not leave the house for safety reasons.
- On their walk, they meet Japanese tourists and Offred is reminded of a time when she could dress like they do. They approached Offred and Ofglen and asked if they were happy, living the way they did, and Offred responded yes because she didn’t know if they where “eyes.”
- On their way out of the market, Offred and Ofglen are having a simple conversation. They cannot have very detailed conversations as they do not know each other well, and are not meant to know each other well. Ofglen asked if she would mind going to the Church, so they headed there.
- Though it was not spoken of, the reasoning behind going to the Church was going to see the wall where the people who had been executed were hung. This was to find out if any of their family members had been killed, or for news about crime within their community.
