Soil is tested for nutrients and moisture content to seeif it is suitable for potato growing and to decide whichvarieties to grow. Potatoes will usually be grown in thesame field for only one out of every six years, or even longer.
Protecting the crop
Farmers plough the ground and turn the soil.Later in the spring, the farmer spreads fertilizer andoften uses a stone separator to remove stones fromthe soil where the potatoes are growing.
Harvesting
Seed potatoes are planted in rows and covered with soil, about 15-17 cm deep.Planting usually takes place in spring, but depends on theclimate.
Storage
Farmers care for their potato crops as they grow, using plant protection products to guard againstinsects and disease.
Theyare grown for around 5 months before theyare ready for harvesting. To see if the crops are ready, farmers test the crops bydigging up, weighing and measuring sample potatoes. The potatoes are then lifted by the harvester.
Potatoes are placed in bulk storage or weighedand bagged ready for distribution. Potatoescan also be stored in boxes in an insulatedpotato store. Farmers will check the potatoesregularly throughout the storage season.
